How to plan a Christmas budget

Put gifts, food and the smaller seasonal costs in one plan before you start shopping.

A Christmas budget does not need to begin with a complicated workbook. Start with a clear list, decide what you are comfortable spending, and keep a record as purchases happen. This guide is a practical planning example, not a recommended spending level.

1. List the jobs your budget needs to cover

Write down the people you want to buy for and the occasions you expect to host. Add the costs that are easy to forget: wrapping, cards, postage and travel. Include only the items that apply to your plans. A shorter, realistic list is more useful than a long list copied from someone else.

2. Give each part a planned amount

Choose your overall limit before allocating amounts to individual gifts. Keep money for hosting and other seasonal costs visible alongside presents. The example below uses a £300 total only to show the arithmetic; replace every amount with your own plan.

Part of the planPlannedSpent so farRemaining
Gifts£180£125£55
Food and hosting£90£40£50
Wrapping and postage£30£12£18
Total£300£177£123

3. Record actual purchases separately

Keep the original plan and the amount actually spent in separate columns. Record a purchase when you make it, then review what remains before the next shopping trip. A gift idea is not yet a purchase: mark the difference so you do not buy twice or assume a present is already sorted.

The Christmas Gift & Budget Planner includes gift ideas, per-person budgets and purchase tracking, with printable pages and a spreadsheet option. You can also start with an ordinary sheet of paper and the checklist below.

4. Connect spending with preparation

If you are hosting, decide the menu after checking guest numbers and dietary needs. Turn the menu into a shopping list before buying ingredients. Keep make-ahead jobs separate from cooking on the day; the Christmas Hosting & Meal Planner focuses on these tasks.

Choose a short time each week to review the plan. During December, move the next small tasks onto a daily list. The undated Advent & December Daily Planner provides pages for 1 to 24 December if you prefer a ready-made layout.
